Bahala is an introspective role simulation game of a troll farm, exploring the moral and societal complexities of political manipulation and digital warfare in the setting of a developing country. Spend the days following up to the election sifting through timelines and algorithms, manipulate post engagement to boost a client’s political image and suppress those who oppose.

Development

Bahala was created in response to a prompt for my Game Prototype module 'Tell a Story'. I was greatly inspired by Papers, Please, which I had a vested interest in as an indie success story, and Disco Elysium. The narrative direction was prompted by the arrest of a controversial former Philippine president.

Event-driven architecture was used to handle dialogue choices and repost/like button triggered events. The development process used the Agile methodology, allowing for iterative refinement and responsive changes to mechanics and narrative direction to meet the module submission deadline.

I was awarded a 2:1 (Upper Second-Class Hons.) for the module overall and 1st (First Class Hons.) for my effective use and analysis of Agile throughout.

Nova Nox is an eccentric, character-driven game that blends rhythm game beatmaps with turn-based RPG combat. Follow the titular and terrible teenage band around London as they step up to battle invading Plutonians– who can only be defeated upon exposure to Nova Nox’s songs and their songs alone.

Choose to explore with precaution to avoid direct contact with the aliens, or lead the band head-first into encounters for a chance at higher combat earnings. The choice is yours. Just be prepared for the looming tension and extraterrestrial shenanigans that follow.

Development

The concept for this game originated as part of a coursework assignment for a game design unit. However, a year later, I decided to revisit and revamp the concept as the final project for my UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology. This redesign incorporated more refined rhythm-game inspired mechanics, enhanced vibrant 2.5D visuals and lived experience into the storytelling elements; to great success.

I was awarded a Distinction (A*A*A*).
